Walk to Fight Alzheimer's- Point Pleasant Beach, NJ
On Saturday, September 23rd, Alzheimer's New Jersey will be hosting their Walk to Fight Alzheimer's in Point Pleasant Beach. Looking for a volunteer opportunity, want to create a team or make a donation, now is your chance. All funds raised will support local New Jersey residents affected by Alzheimer's disease.
Steven Knapp's story is heartfelt and touching. " I was 24 when my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I didn't know what that meant. He was a brilliant man, an engineer, the "go-to" guy for everything. From doing the NY Times crossword puzzle in pen to dominating Trivial Pursuit, I couldn't understand how a man of so much knowledge was being afflicted with this disease." His wife, would become his primary caregiver before his passing in 2002. During this time the family learned as much as they could about this non-discriminating disease.
The unbelievable news in 2004 came when the Knapp family was informed, Steven's mother would be diagnosed with Alzheimer's. This time the family was better equipped with the knowledge of the disease, which wouldn't make it any easier. The family made the most of each day with her until she passed away in September 2011.
Over 20 years ago, Team Steven Knapp Home Improvements started with two team people who were just learning about this mind-robbing disease. Today, they walk with over 20 team members to honor and remember so many loved ones and raise awareness about the 5 million people currently living with the disease.
Team Steven Knapp Home Improvements will hit the boardwalk again on Saturday, September 23rd 2017 at Point Pleasant Beach. "We walk with hope. We walk for a cure. We walk to help Alzheimer's New Jersey serve as many families as possible to receive the supportive services that they need while dealing with this disease."
A compelling story.
