Weekend Getaway to Atlantic City

If you find yourself with a weekend free, I recommend heading down to Atlantic City. First, stop thinking I don't have money to gamble and that is the only reason to go to Atlantic City. As someone who grew up in New Jersey, I've spent many days/weekends in AC and never once gambled until I was 21. Even still, I go to Atlantic City, not to gamble, but for a fun weekend away!

The question I hear from time to time is do you need a car? Personally I like to drive down; however you can take NJ Transit from NYC to Atlantic City via the train or the bus. Atlantic City also has a small commuter airport, so if you aren't local you can fly in. Many of the hotels are on the boardwalk which makes for not having a car fine; however you will have to Uber if you stay at Borgata or Harrah's as they are not directly on the boardwalk.

Where to Stay

With that said, where should you stay. I have stayed at all three of these properties and love each of them for different elements.

Hard Rock Atlantic City has the music vibe, that young and hip crowd is drawn to the bright lights and music blasting through the entire hotel and on the casino floor. Right on the boardwalk this is a hot spot for young adults as well as music lovers alike.

Ocean Casino Resort, located right next to Hard Rock is much more laid back, quiet, and for those looking for relax. The outdoor area is perfect to catch both the beautiful sunrises and sunsets. I also highly recommend checking out the Spa as well. From Brunch to Fine Dining dinner there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Finally, if you want that upscale and luxury experience with the high-end price tag, I would recommend Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa. With amazing spas and premier nightclubs, you don't ever have to find yourself on the casino floor, if you don't want. As for dining, I recommend Izakaya by Michael Schulson

After you arrive to your hotel, drop your bags and hit the ground running to cover as much as you can during your weekend stay!

Where to Shop
Every hotel will have a boutique and probably a few shops here and there for you to browse, but I recommend making these two stops. First, check out The Playground, which was once The Pier Shops at Caesars, which is more upscale brands. Three levels with shops, restaurants, and even space on the top floor this is directly on the beach.

Next, if you are looking for a bargain, be sure to stop at Tanger Outlets in Atlantic City. As you can see there is ample shopping, which may just cause you to gamble just a little in order to spend some more, however each person is different.

Where to Dine

When it comes to dining, there are endless options in Atlantic City from Fast Food to Casual Dining and then your Fine Dining options as well. I could do just a post on where to eat while staying in AC; however I will just share a few places.

Brunch- This happens to be my favorite meal. My friends and family will tell you I am obsessed with Brunch and Eggs Benedicts of all kinds. I have a goal to try one in all 50 states, but that for another post.

1) The Continental (Which is currently closed due to the pandemic). Once things re-open I would recommend checking them out. Here is the brunch menu. Located in The Playground, it was amazing beach views, wonderful staff and delicious meals.

2) Harper's ( Currently Take Out Only) located on the lobby level inside Ocean Casino Resort. Harper's has views of the gardens and skyline and the brunch menu is my ideal menu.

As for lunch, grab a bite to eat on the boardwalk! That's one of the greatest parts of Atlantic City is the boardwalk and the beach. From Pizza to Ice Cream you are sure to find something quick to eat while exploring the boardwalk!

When it comes to dinner, decide if you want Casual Dining for Fine Dining and then go from there. You have Steakhouses, American restaurants, Japanese restaurants and so much more the choose from. Even before the pandemic, I would recommend staying away from Buffets. With endless options you can find something for each person in your party, guaranteed.

1) Chart House has the most amazing views and is on the higher price end, but since you are not gambling and saving that money, it could be worth it. As of now they are temporarily closed; however when they re-open I would most definitely make a reservation.

2) Council Oak Steaks & Seafoods located inside Hard Rock is another favorite. This upscale intimate setting is perfect for that date night or special occasion. If for no other reason, grab a seat and people watch on the casino floor, not like a creep, OK.

3) Coastal Craft Kitchen & Bar located inside of Harrah's is more casual with that more fun and hip vibe. The menu is meant to be shared amongst friends and family so you can sample a variety of the food, which I really enjoy, personally! Well that was before the pandemic. I still recommend checking them out!

What to Do

Whether you are relaxing at the pool, dining at one of the delicious restaurants, walking the boardwalk or catching the rays on the beach there is something for everyone, that does not include gambling.

Steel Pier is a must visit when you are in Atlantic City, for both children and grownups alike. Located on the boardwalk and steps from Hard Rock Casino, you are in for a treat. With views from all around, games and rides for everyone, you are bound to feel like a child again! Oh, and get the Fried Oreos or Funnel Cake because if you don't you are missing out.

The Atlantic City Boardwalk which is more than four miles long is worth the walk. Take your time, popping in and out of the casinos, grab an ice cream, people watch, or just sit and take in the ocean views after the long walk.

See a show at one of the many casino's along the boardwalk.

There you have it, how to spend the weekend in Atlantic City without having to gamble. Obviously I would recommend visiting once it is safe to do so, therefore save this post for the future!

XoXo,
Tracy
